My Story
Cheka Brown Birth Doula Services

About Me

My name is Francesca and I go by "Cheka", (pronounced checkuh).  My pronouns are she/her.

In 2012 I was invited to support a friend for the birth of her first child.  It was there that I was able to witness the power, beauty, and strength of a laboring person.  My perception of birth changed from something to "get through" to an exhilarating and empowering experience.  I found myself naturally jumping into a supportive role both physically and emotionally, and loved every second of it.  As a social worker by trade, I have a passion for working intimately with families (of any configuration), and a knack for being calm, hands-on, and present.  Supporting families through the wide range of emotions birth may bring is a natural extension of my skill and passion.

My Background

I was born and raised in Oakland, CA, graduated from UC Davis, and went on to receive a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Columbia University.  I worked as a social worker for many years in the realms of community organizing and child welfare before becoming a doula.  I am Mama to two young boys, a lover of hiking in the redwoods, traveling and living in Latin America, and spending time with my husband, family, and friends.  As a DONA Certified doula, I look forward to helping you meet your baby in the most loving way possible; I will care for you physically and emotionally, help you understand the birth process and the choices available to you, and support you in having ownership of your birth, no matter what it looks like.
